Amazon has begun shipping its latest Kindle Scribe devices, including the highly anticipated Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, as promised during its fall product event. The new models—the Colorsoft and the Kindle Scribe with Front Light—are now available for purchase. The base Kindle Scribe model, lacking a front light, remains listed as “coming soon” with an expected arrival in early 2026.
The Colorsoft, priced at $630, offers a full-color E Ink display, while the standard Scribe with Front Light starts at $500. These prices are comparable to competitors like reMarkable’s color Paper Pro tablet. Amazon has also introduced key hardware upgrades, including a larger 11-inch screen (up from 10.2 inches) achieved through reduced bezels, and a redesigned mini-LED lighting system.
Key Improvements : The new Scribes are thinner (5.4mm) and lighter (400 grams) than their predecessors, thanks to a more efficient design. A custom MediaTek processor delivers a reported 40% performance boost. However, unlike the Kindle Paperwhite or Colorsoft, these models are not waterproof.
Addressing Past Issues: Amazon previously faced criticism for yellow tinting on the bottom and sides of its first color E Ink model, the Kindle Colorsoft. The company paused shipments to address the issue and replaced affected units. Early testing of the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft suggests this problem has been resolved, with no noticeable tinting even at maximum brightness and vivid color settings.
Why this matters: The introduction of a color E Ink option from Amazon is significant because it expands the capabilities of e-readers beyond traditional black-and-white text. This caters to users who want richer visual experiences for comics, magazines, or detailed documents. However, at these price points, Amazon is competing with dedicated e-ink tablets such as the reMarkable, which may have a stronger appeal for professional writers or artists.
A full review of the new Kindle Scribe models is forthcoming, but early impressions indicate a notable improvement in performance and design.
