AI Mode in Google Search has cleared the 1 billion monthly user mark. One billion people are asking their phones for answers, not keywords. And if you looked at any results page lately, you’ve seen it. AI Overviews are everywhere now. Ubiquitous, intrusive, everywhere.
Today’s I/O didn’t stop there. They threw even more AI at the problem. Because of course they did.
The Search Box Gets Weird
The old search box? It’s finally evolving. First time in twenty-five years, mind you. They call it the AI Search Box with Intelligent Search.
It expands when you type. Why? So you can ramble. Natural language queries instead of fragmented tags. You can also drop in images, videos, files, or Chrome tabs as reference material. Context matters now, apparently.
And because a simple answer isn’t enough, the AI Overviews themselves get a tweak. You can now follow up on that summary at the top of the page. It’s a conversation. You poke the AI, it pushes back, you dive deeper. Feels a bit like a chatbot, but it lives inside search results.
They upgraded the engine powering it too. Gemini 3.5 Flash is running the show now.
Agents That Watch
Here’s the shift that might actually change how people use the site: AI Search agents.
You give them a task. You give them parameters. Then you walk away. The agent stays on it. 24/7 scanning news sites, blogs, social feeds for whatever you need.
Hunting for an apartment? Feed it your requirements—budget, location, pets allowed—and it scans the market all day for matches that fit. It doesn’t forget. It waits.
Who gets this? If you have a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, it arrives this summer. If not? Wait. But the basic agentic stuff for shopping and booking? That comes for everyone this summer too.
Price checks, availability updates, direct booking links. The AI looks for it. It also makes calls. Yes, literally. The AI can phone businesses for services on your behalf. How many people wanted that? Hard to say.

Connect your Gmail, your Photos. Maybe Calendar soon, though the details are vague. The AI uses that context to guess what you’re looking for before you finish typing. Privacy purists? You have controls. Google claims you keep control, at least. That’s the line they’re dancing on.
And then, because coding is hard and Google loves a good trapdoor into their ecosystem, they’re adding coding tools directly into Search. Powered by Google Antigravity (yes, that’s the name).
Not for devs. For regular folks who want to build a custom fitness tracker. Or plan a wedding dashboard. The idea is to democratize creation. To pull the layperson into the build loop. It looks neat in a demo. In practice? Probably messy. But it’s coming.
Search isn’t just finding things anymore. It’s doing them. The box expands. The agent waits. You type your question into a void that talks back.
Does it matter? Maybe not today. But give it six months. You’ll probably be talking to the page instead of scanning it.
