Duo the owl is staring at you. That judging look cuts deep.
But maybe. Just maybe. You can cheat the system for a little while.
Duolingo announced something new on June 1. A lifeline for the forgetful. If your streak broke. If that little fire went out. You can reignite it.
Three lessons.
Do them in one sitting. Boom. Streak restored.
But here is the catch.
You only have one month to do it. June is the window. Miss this window and the door slams shut. So if you plan on slacking off?
Pick this month.
Streaks matter. To most users. Obsessively.
Fifteen million people have kept their streaks alive for over a year. Fifteen. Million. And an unofficial hall of fame? Thirteen years long. That’s dedication. Or compulsion. Maybe both.
It takes one single missed day to kill thirteen years of habit. Travel happens. People get sick. Life gets in the way. The app doesn’t care about your jet lag.
Rules are rules, even for the rescue attempt.
– Your streak has to be at least 30 days long before it breaks. No rescuing tiny flames.
– The three make-up lessons? Done in one session. Not spread out over three days. All at once.
Eligible users see a button pop up. Revive Streak. It’s right there. Tap it. Do the work. Move on.
Why do they let us?
Social media demand. Loud and relentless.
“In the past year alone, tens… thousands… of learners asked for their streak back. Across more than 80 countries.”
It was too loud to ignore.
Will they bring this feature back? Maybe. Maybe not.
Duolingo thrives on that little anxiety knot in your stomach. The one that makes you check your phone while brushing your teeth.
June ends.
The owl waits.
