Motional Robotaxis Now Available on Uber in Las Vegas

Motional, Hyundai’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary, has integrated its self-driving Ioniq 5 fleet into the Uber ride-hailing app in Las Vegas. This marks a significant step for the company, which underwent a major restructuring two years ago after facing financial and technological challenges.

The Current Rollout

Starting this Friday, users in select areas of Las Vegas can now request rides in Motional’s robotaxis through Uber. The initial service zones include:

  • Resorts World and Encore casinos on the Strip
  • Westgate (near the Las Vegas Convention Center)
  • Town Square shopping center (close to the airport)
  • Downtown Las Vegas curbside pickup

Currently, a human safety monitor is still present in each vehicle. Uber and Motional have stated plans to expand the service area in the future, though specific timelines remain unconfirmed. Users must enable the autonomous vehicle pickup option within the Uber app to increase their chances of being matched with a robotaxi.

From Near Collapse to Rebirth

Motional’s journey to this point has been turbulent. Founded as a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, the company struggled to meet its initial goals, particularly in competing with Uber’s other robotaxi partners. Aptiv withdrew funding, forcing Hyundai to invest another $1 billion to keep the project alive.

This investment came with a restructuring that included a 40% workforce reduction and a fundamental shift in technology strategy. Motional moved away from earlier approaches to focus on AI and neural networks – a common trend across the autonomous vehicle industry. The pivot was intended to create a scalable, affordable solution, even if it meant temporarily pausing commercial operations.

Fully Driverless Future

Motional aims to operate a fully driverless service in Las Vegas by the end of the year. This goal is contingent on further testing and regulatory approvals, but the company has already been running internal robotaxi services in the city for months. Motional also intends to expand to other cities in partnership with both Uber and Lyft, though no concrete dates have been announced.

The integration of Motional’s fleet into Uber is a turning point for the company, demonstrating its ability to recover from near-failure and adapt to the evolving demands of the autonomous vehicle market. It also highlights the growing trend of partnerships between tech giants and automakers in the race to deploy self-driving technology at scale.
