The photo challenge organized by Wissen.de and E.ON Energie is about more than just picking red apples. The theme has been deliberately broadened the theme of “red”. The organizers expect maximum creative freedom, surpassing the high professional standards of previous Life is Energy competitions. They are looking for a wide spectrum of interpretations. Almost anything goes, the only exception is the lack of black and white photos. If you miss the original deadline, there is no need to panic. Due to great interest, the application period has been extended until January 31, 2007. Now you have the option to send.
Why is it red? The Science and Psychology of the Spectrum
Why this shade? A simple search for the word “red” in the Wissen.de database returns 117 results. There is a lot of data to process. From a physics point of view, red has the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum. This is not just a trivial matter. It affects how we see images. But for photographers, the psychological weight of color is even more interesting. Red is full of meaning. It represents passion and shame. It represents raw power and, unfortunately, cruelty.
Physiologically, seeing red speeds up your breathing and heart rate. It is classified as a “warm color” along with orange, yellow and purple. The question is how to convert this physiological reaction into a still image. Wissen.de and the E.ON Energie team are waiting for a response.

Judge
Who decides which images are accepted? The selection committee includes:
- Bärbel Tannert: Artistic representative of E.ON Energie
- Claudia Görgen: Representative of E.ON Energie Online
- Charles Kenwright: Image editor at Wissen.de
- **Jörg Peter Urbach: ** Editor-in-Chief of Wissen.de
These people work on images every day. They know the difference between a snapshot and a statement. They strive for creativity, not just technical perfection. Professional level works participated in the last competition. This one asks for something more personal. Capture the warmth, danger and intensity of red in a way only you can understand.
The extension gives you a few extra days. Use them. Before you press the shutter, think about what the color red means to you.
